Interpretation and Visualized Information

The song that Alex and I chose for this assignment is “Mess Is Mine” by Vance Joy. Below are the lyrics to the song:

Talking like we used to do
It was always me and you
Shaping up and shipping out
Check me in and check me out

Do you like walking in the rain?
When you think of love, do you think of pain?
You can tell me what you see
I will choose what I believe

Hold on, darling
This body is yours,
This body is yours and mine
Well hold on, my darling
This mess was yours,
Now your mess is mine

Your mess is mine

You’re the reason that I feel so strong
The reason that I’m hanging on
You know you gave me all the time
Oh, did I give enough of mine?

Hold on, darling
This body is yours,
This body is yours and mine
Well hold on, my darling
This mess was yours,
Now your mess is mine

Bring me to your house
Tell me sorry for the mess
Hey, I don’t mind
You’re talking in your sleep
Out of time
Well, you still make sense to me
Your mess is mine

Your mess is mine
This body’s yours and this body’s mine
Your mess is mine

When we agreed on a song, I had never heard of “Mess Is Mine.” I listened to Vance Joy in the past, and I really like his work and was excited to listen to it- I highly recommend it!

To me, this song is catchy, and holds a lot of meaning. “Mess Is Mine” tells me a man speaking to a woman he loves, saying that love, specifically their love, isn’t perfect. There will be some rain, and pain that accompanies it. It merely matters what you chose to focus on, and he will focus on her. Over the course of the song, they seem to have broken up, and also have gotten back together, which is a ‘mess’ as well. He doesn’t seem to mind because they are united corporeally. Therefore, whatever mess they make, they equally share in it. Humans make mistakes, and he seems to understand that. They are each others strength in their own individual pain and ‘mess’, and despite her confusion, he understands.

When looking at the Word Cloud that was created, it was interesting to see the most frequent words bolded, the largest being ‘mess,’ and then ‘hold,’ ‘darling,’ and ‘body.’ It makes me focus more on the refrain, because I was too focused about the depth in the storyline and the title. The medium sized words are ‘body’s,’ ‘check,’ ‘think,’ ‘time,’ ‘well,’ ‘talking,’ body,’ ‘see’, and ‘walking”, which I think is pretty neat because it focuses on action both in mind and body. The Word Cloud offered a neat perspective, focusing on the words as opposed to the storyline, and words have depth and meaning in them too. Each, has their own story.
